About Drew

Drew Birns was a child actor in Los Angeles, beginning his career at the age of nine under the direction of John Hume at the Downey Children’s Theater. He pursued his academic training with Jerry Blunt at Los Angeles City College. Drew was a member of the L.A.C.C. company that performed Congereve’s Way of the World, which won the first American College Theater Festival, held at Washington D.C.’s Ford’s Theater. During his senior year at L.A.C.C. Drew began teaching small private classes in acting.

Drew received a full scholarship and earned his BFA at Carnegie Mellon University. In 1974, he was accepted as a resident member of The Tyrone Guthrie Theater Acting Company, performing in King Lear, As You Like It, The Crucible, and School For Scandal. While at the Guthrie, he created their first outreach program, a series of acting workshops held in the men’s and women’s state prisons. These workshops resulted in performances, where for the first time, the public was invited into the prisons to view the prisoner’s rehabilitative work. These performances were nationally reviewed to great acclaim. In addition, Drew taught private acting classes in conjunction with several Equity theaters in and around the Twin Cities.

Drew then worked at various repertory companies, as well as beginning his career in voiceovers. He has recorded more than 4000 voiceovers for such national clients as American Express, Delta Airlines, Goodyear, Subaru, Nexium, Random House, Proctor and Gamble, and more. He has voiced programs on ABC News, Masterpiece Theater, CBS News, Today, PBS, and Mutual Of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.

Drew is currently “the voice” of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on Comedy Central. He has won 6 Emmy awards for his work announcing The Daily Show.

Drew was on staff of The School for Film and Television in New York City for ten years, teaching Voice-Over. Today, he teaches Voice-Over privately at Tabby Sound Studio, also in New York.

Drew’s proudest achievement is his daughter, Diana, a licensed psychologist in private practice.
